Thoughts for Thursday - No Gym For Me!

Today I listened to my body ... must rest, must rest. Last night, I was barely able to move and get into bed without hubby helping me. I had done turbokick at LA Fitness along with 45 minutes of leg training. Right after, headed on home to work, work and work (have you done your taxes lately?). It hit me that evening right around 10:30pm when I can barely keep my eyes open. As much as I wanted to go to Bodyworks and Step class the next morning (because I crave the endorphins!), I just knew I had to step back and say no. So I took a day off (not from everything I wished, but from the gym itself). I still couldn't help but text my friend Ariel to see "how class went." I missed my friends, not necessarily the gym nor the pain! ...
I guess what I have been reading in Oxygen and elsewhere is how important it is to listen to our bodies. We often get accustomed to routine that we stop listening and keep going. How selfish I was to my body from past weeks which I am sure I could have also taken a day of rest. My day today was a mix of both work and personal time off to recharge. It was a much needed break from the daily week grind of my gym routine. I still kept my routine of "clean eating" to yes give my body a rest, but to also provide it with a healthy mix of lean proteins, complex carbs and healthy fats. Needless to say I feel great and ready to workout tomorrow! What a start to my weekend :) ....
Have you listened to your body lately? ....

Tilapia Fish Taco

1lb tilapia filets sauteed in 1 tbsp olive oil, minced garlic and spinach. In a bowl, whisk 2 tbsp of greek yogurt, fresh lemon juice (half a lemon is good) and dash of sea salt. Put fillets and spinach in a whole wheat wrap (heat wrap in microwave for 30 seconds), add yogurt/lemon sauce. Add a few sliced grape tomatoes and avocado. Sprinkle w/ cilantro flakes. Clean lunch!!! Enjoy :)

Hardwork Pays Off :)

This past weekend I joined my friend and bodyworks instructor, Julie Matusz - for a R.I.P.P.E.D master class in Rockwall. Julie has been such a wonderful friend who has continued to inspire me in my fitness journey. Whether it is over a healthy brunch at City Blends in Rowlett, after her Bodyworks class at LA Fitness or simply via email or text, she has always been there to answer my questions or guide me in the world of fitness! Thank you Julie! ....
Not only was it an amazing class (, I also met some wonderful and inspiring people. This entire weekend I couldn't help but think, I want to become a group exercise instructor one day :) .... Don't get me wrong I love my steady job as a tax accountant, specializing in foreign national and expatriate tax, but also love and embrace fitness. Every email/text I get from family and/or friends (Emily, Reeta, Ginni, Chinna, Crystal, Julian to name a few) asking for help/advice or just to share w/ me their progression further motivates me more to partake in the fitness industry. Because I too have been in his/her shoes and needed a little (or BIG) push to get the show going! This weekend I also compared before and after pictures of myself and teared up at the result. Did I do that in 8 months?!? Really?!? ....
Wow, everyday I wake up more energized than the day before. I no longer wake up dreading what outfit to put on, fearing will the button pop out, leaving my closet w/ piles of clothes on the floor that just didn't fit, skipping breakfast in hopes of losing a pound lol .... No more tears of humiliation and embarassment and self-questioning of why I let myself go :-/ .... Why it took so long for me to get off the couch, I don't know. But I am so glad I finally did.
Have a great week everyone. Make this the Monday to start :) ....

Snow Days - a true test!

The forecast calls for a high of 54 today in Dallas, Texas. Unfortunately, this evening and tomorrow is another winter storm coming to North Texas. Last week, we had 4 snowdays (Tuesday thru Friday) as the Facebook statuses were all about a.) loving the snow b.) hating the snow c.) is the gym open? d.) what can we do at home, but eat!?!? .... For me, I was mostly b and c! Thank goodness not d! It was a true test!!! ....
My usual routine of 5-6 days of cardio and weight training decreased to 2 (Monday and Friday). Sure, you can easily blame Mother Nature, but she sure was PmS'ing last week. However, I was able to enjoy my hubby who worked from home and my son, Alexander who turned our house into a smaller Babies 'R' Us lol so I am very thankful for that. He was a bit too young to enjoy the snow (which was only a day since we had ice for 3 days). And hubby and I just moved from Cincinnati back in June so needless to say, we are done with snow shoveling, ice picking and frigid, cold weather :-/ .... But I am happy that many kiddos in Texas were able to enjoy the snow and their families.
Now .... how did you do with nutrition? Many of us are active bodies who are used to getting our dose of endorphins and feel-good adrenaline from our group exercise classes, personal training sessions and/or our normal interaction with our fitness friends. My time in the gym is "me" time, where I focus on just me and re-charge. Well those 4 days were a bit tough and even hubby. We took turns taking care of Alexander while the other worked ... all about teamwork! We are both able to still earn a living from home so nothing stopped there.
One thing I learned from clean eating is to stock my fridge and pantry with clean foods. Something I had been practicing for quite some time now. The Monday before the storm, I was grateful to have had a chance to stock up, not knowing really what was to come. Then the winter storm arrived and I had no junk in my house (although warm, soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies sounded so good at the time!). Thank you Tosca Reno and Oxygen Magazine. I believe this was a true test. Yes, I could exercise at home, but it's just not the same (I know my fitness friends would agree with me on this). When the gym is not available, sticking to clean eating is the best way to go. I knew I had embraced the clean eating lifestyle when I still continued eating every 3 hours of a mixture of lean protein and complex carbohydrates during those 4 days. The only thing missing were my hardcore workouts. My hubby was supportive and said to reward myself on Friday for a job well done. So ... he gave me a bite size York Peppermint Patty (this was a special candy that has been with us since we were dating). I did it! Jason was also thankful that our kitchen was stocked with clean foods so even he didn't gain or lose track of his fitness goals. He too wasn't able to make it in the gym, not even 2 days due to his workload from home. And even little Alexander ate clean every 3 hours or so.
I was able to make it in the gym Saturday and Sunday and kept my "treat" meal as planned (Wingstop and a slice of my kiwi/blueberry cheesecake on Superbowl night). I couldnt believe the discipline because I remember not being like that just a year ago. Had I let go and eaten rotten, my hubby and son probably would have as well :-( ...
I hope you stuck to your fitness goals and withstood the test! If not, don't beat yourself up! Instead pick yourself up, put a smile on your face and lace up those sneakers! It's a new week, a new test for a new you! .... If something is worth fighting for, it is worth waiting for! Happy training ;) ...
